Why to be rude?

Today and tomorrow i am for coaching sessions in Warsaw, Poland. My first meeting this morning was with the General Manager. We both went back from holiday so we started under a nice cup of coffee to chat about the holiday. I don't know how it came but we had in coming that we had our comments on the guests and not on the employees of the hotel. And we found out that we observed both the same thing. How customers behave themselves towards the employees. In general, and i know it is dangerous to talk abou general issues but still, we didn't see much that customers wanted to interact with the employees. And the otherway around happened also. You saw that the employees did their job, without smile without any extra attention. But also little interaction between guests. We both found out that when we stepped in an elevator we said goodday en when we left the elevator stepped out 'have a good day'. We had sometimes that they looked to us if we were from another planet. But luckily also sometimes they greeted us back. When a waiter picks up a dirty plate we both said 'Thank you' and we found both out, me in Bulgaria and he in Poland, that immediately we got a smile back and after that extra attention. The service went at least towards us up to a higher level. Just by a few simple words and attention to another human being.
